'Following Francis by Caring for Poor'
Central New York Franciscan Experience Is March 28

Francis taught his followers to love and care for the poor. The Central New York Franciscan Experience on March 28 will explore the Franciscan challenge to be compassionate in the midst of the world by using the advice Francis and Clare gave to their earliest followers.

By studying Clare and Agnes of Prague, in particular, this workshop will explore the essential corporal and spiritual links that Franciscans have to the poor and suffering of our world.

The doors of the Franciscan Center, 2500 Grant Blvd., Syracuse, NY will open at 8:30 a.m. after an optional 8 a.m. Mass at St. Anthony's Chapel so attendees can browse the sale of Franciscan items. The workshop will begin at 9:15 with introductions and a prayer service highlighting Lady Poverty.

Sr. Joan Mueller, Ph. D, will give four presentations throughout the day. There will be some time after lunch for quiet reflection or a visit to Mother Marianne's Shrine. The day will end before 4 p.m. for those who need to travel or attend Mass at local churches.

Sister Joan is a Franciscan sister and an internationally recognized expert in the history and theology of the early Franciscan movement. In addition to her ministry as professor of theology and Christian spirituality at Creighton University, she has written several books and numerous scholarly articles on Franciscanism and related topics of forgiveness, reconciliation, and discernment.

Her historical novel, Francis: The Saint of Assisi, a book on the life of St. Francis, has been translated into German, Dutch, and Italian. Sister Joan served as the historical consultant of the musical Francesco that premiered in Assisi, Italy on May 28, 2000. Her book, Clare's Letters to Agnes, is a translation and study of four letters that Clare of Assisi wrote to Agnes of Prague.

Her latest book, Living a Spirituality of Action, a new release by St. Anthony's Messenger Press, will be available to those who attend the workshop for the discounted price of $10.00.
